Sherrilyn Kenyon (born 1965) is a bestselling and award-winning American
Biography
Early Years
Childhood
Sherrilyn Kenyon, known as Sherri, was born in Columbus, Georgia. She gained her "love of all things that go bump in the night" from her mother, who loved paranormal storylines and never censored what movies the young girl was allowed to watch with her. Kenyon's father left the family when she was eight, leaving her mother to raise Kenyon , her brothers, and her older sister, Trish, who has severe Even as a child Kenyon knew that she wanted to be a writer. In kindergarten, she wrote in her Brownie manual that she wanted to be a writer and a mother when she grew up. At seven she wrote and illustrated her first novel, a horror story about a girl who kills her brothers. At fourteen Kenyon made her first professional sale, and continued to write for school newspapers, yearbooks, local papers and magazines throughout high school. College Years Despite her writing experience, Kenyon originally intended to major in art in college. She was accepted into the Savannah College of Art and Design, but was unable to afford the tuition to attend. She entered college instead, but after completing half of her courses in art she switched majors to history, which did not require so many expensive supplies.cite web | last = Smith | first = Lodeen | authorlink = | coauthors = | title = An Interview with Sherrilyn | work = | publisher = Sherrilynn Kenyon official Website | date = | url = http://www.dailyinquisitor.com//sherrilyn/interview.htm | format = | doi = | accessdate = 2007-02-09 ] After dabbling in a total of twelve majors, Kenyon graduated with an interdisciplinary major that combined medieval history and language with Classical Studies. She had enough credits to also earn minors in philosophy, psychology, and French, and to earn a certificate of Medieval Studies.cite web | last = | first = | authorlink = | coauthors = | title = Promo Items | work = | publisher = Sherrilyn Kenyon Official Website | date = | url = http://www.dailyinquisitor.com//sherrilyn/daylife.htm | format = | doi = | accessdate = 2007-02-09 ] When Kenyon was 20, she decided it was time to take her experience writing for magazines and parlay it into the book market. Just as she finished her manuscript and prepared to send it to publishers, her brother Buddy died, and a devastated Kenyon lost the desire to write. Resuming Writing Three years later, Kenyon married and the couple moved to Two years later Kenyon sold her first book, with five more sales coming quickly. She won several awards and had high sell-throughs, but after the publication of her sixth novel she found herself unable to get a writing contract. Hardships At the same time, Kenyon was in the midst of a great deal of turmoil in her personal life. Her father died in February 1995. A very difficult pregnancy left her unable to work. The baby arrived seven weeks early and was forced to spend six weeks in the neo-natal intensive care unit, and Kenyon barely survived this delivery. Because her husband was just finishing school, and with her inability to work and their high medical bills, the family "lost everything [we] had." Later the same year, her mother was diagnosed with cancer, and Kenyon became pregnant again. This second pregnancy resulted in serious medical issues as well, causing Kenyon to be hospitalized for the majority of the time. With her mother unable to visit because of her condition, her son restricted from visiting because he was a sickly infant, and her husband spending most of his time taking care of their son, Kenyon was lonely. To occupy herself, she spent many hours creating and exploring the world of the Dark-Hunters. Although Kenyon has a Career Fiction In 1997, just as her web work began to pay well, Kenyon began dreaming up the details of a pirate novel. Her agent did not like the proposal and declined to continue working with her. Despite that disappointment, Kenyon determined to send her proposal off by herself, sending the story to a single editor, another former agent who had recently been hired by Harper.. That editor asked to see her story, and within a week had offered a three book contract. This book was very different from her previous works, so she chose to use a pseudonym, Kinley MacGregor, which is the maiden name of her great-grandmother. Even as Kenyon submitted her Kinley MacGregor manuscripts, she continued to work on her vampire stories. On the urging of her editor, she contracted with a new agent in 1999. This agent was very interested in the vampire stories, and soon found a home for them at St. Martin's Press. Her most well known works are her Hunter-Legends stories, which comprise of the Dark-Hunters, Were-Hunters and Dream-Hunters series. The books focus on an ancient "Pyramid of Protection that the ancient Greek gods formed to protect the human race from supernatural predators and to protect the order of the universe." Many of the first Dark-Hunter heroes first appeared to Kenyon when she was writing fantasy stories for herself in high school. In the mid-1980s, while working for a small science fiction magazine called "Cutting Edge", her boss asked her to write a long-running serial for the magazine. She brought many of her favorite characters from her previous fantasies into one larger series. This was the start of the Dark-Hunter world. In this series, which has now been percolating for over twenty years, Kenyon has created an entire universe, the rules of which are maintained solely in her head.cite web | last = Ward | first = Jean Marie | authorlink = | coauthors = | title = Sherrilyn Kenyon: Coloring Outside Traditional Romance Lines | work = | publisher = Crescent Blues | date = 1998 | url = http://www.crescentblues.com/6_8issue/int_kenyon.shtml | format = | doi = | accessdate = 2007-02-09 ] Non-Fiction In addition to her successful fiction career, Kenyon has also written several non-fiction books. She wrote the "Character-Naming Sourcebook", which was finally purchased and published by Writer's Digest. The last of her non-fiction books, "The Character Naming Source Book", has its roots in Kenyon's childhood. Her grandfather was a linguist, and often gave her mini-lessons on the common links between languages and words. When Kenyon began writing her own stories as a small child, she began keeping a list of names that she liked for future use. As she aged, she continued to develop the list, eventually organizing it by origin, so that if she were writing a French character she could easily find a French name. When fellow author Graphic novels In May 2006, "Lords of Avalon" was intended to be produced as a monthly comic starting summer 2007, with a script penned by E-Books As a result of her love of technology, Kenyon had one of the first e-books, published in 1997. In addition to her writing, she still does freelance web development work.cite web | last = | first = Barb | authorlink = | coauthors = | title = Interview with our Author of the Month Sherrilyn Kenyon a.k.a. She is also ambidextrous. Kenyon usually writes a first draft of a novel in three to four weeks, although she has been known to completely finish a novel in less than four weeks. In her spare time, Kenyon plays the Kenyon states that she only owns three pieces of clothing that are not black (a white chemise for Ren faires and two pairs of jeans). However, fan photographs show otherwise. She has described her personal style as "Goth," and claims that she dresses this way because her mother refused to buy her a black velvet dress when she was in first grade. Once she got a job at age fifteen and had the money to buy her own clothes, Kenyon has chosen to purchase no other color.cite web | last = Kenyon | first = Sherrilyn | authorlink = | coauthors = | title = About Me | work = | publisher =Sherrilyn Kenyon Official Website | date = | url = http://www.dailyinquisitor.com//sherrilyn/aboutme.htm | format = | doi = Kenyon is married and has three sons.
