Georgette Leblanc

Georgette Leblanc (b. Tancarville, February 8, 1875 – d. Le Cannet, near Cannes, October 27, 1941) was a French soprano and author.

She was the sister of Maurice Leblanc. She first debuted at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, on November 23, 1893 in "L'Attaque du Moulin". Leblanc was associated for a time with Greco-Armenian mystic G. I. Gurdjieff. Leblanc was the friend and possibly the lover of fellow Gurdjieff student, Margaret Anderson. She was also a friend of Jean Cocteau.

Originally slated to perform as Mélisande in Maurice Maeterlinck and Claude Debussy's Symbolist opera "Pelléas et Mélisande", she was replaced by Mary Garden. This angered Maeterlinck, who was also her lover. She later married Maeterlinck. Leblanc authored several works, including two volumes of autobiography, as well as children's books and travelogues. Leblanc died at Cannes, Alpes-Maritimes and was buried in the Notre Dame des Agnes Cemetery beside Margaret Anderson.
