Robin COOK 1931-1994

Robert William Arthur Cook est né à Londres le 12 juin 1931. Fils aîné d’un magnat du textile et d’une mère américaine d’ascendance polonaise, il passe son enfance dans la maison familiale londonienne, à quelques pas de Baker Street puis, lorsque la guerre éclate, dans le Kent, à Roydon Hall, près de Maidstone. Il entre le 6 mai 1944 à Eton, qu’il quitte de son plein gré trois ans plus tard. Puis il effectue son service militaire, dont il sort avec le grade de sous-officier. Dans les années 1950, il décide de “voir le monde”. À Paris, il séjourne au Beat Hotel de la rue Gît-le-Cœur, aux côtés de Burroughs et de Ginsberg. À New York, il emménage dans l’East Side, et, selon son biographe John Williams, “fréquente les filles de Harlem et les héritières de la Nouvelle-Angleterre”. Il épouse une de ces héritières, dont il a un fils. Le mariage dure un an. Il se fixe alors en Espagne, à Salamanque, où ses prises de position antifranquistes lui valent des ennuis.

De retour en Angleterre en 1960, Robin Cook accepte d’être l’homme de paille de la mafia locale, dirigée par les frères Krays, dans des entreprises concernant les travaux publics et le bâtiment. Son nom apparaît alors en première page, à propos du vol d’un Rubens.

Dans son premier roman, The Crust on Its Uppers (Crème anglaise , 1962), il règle ses comptes avec la bourgeoisie anglaise, qu’il juge hypocrite, étroitement conservatrice, antisémite, irresponsable et tentée par le fascisme. Ces thèmes reviennent dans les cinq romans suivants: Bombe Surprise (1963), The Legacy of the Stiff Upper Lip (1966), Private Parts and Public Places (Vices privés, vertus publiques , 1967), A State of Denmark (1970) et The Tenants of Dirt Street (La Rue obscène , 1971).

La fin des années 1960 le voit installé comme viticulteur en Italie, dans un village de Toscane qui, après mai 1968, décide de faire sécession et le nomme ministre des Affaires étrangères et ministre des Finances.

À la fin de 1970, il est de retour à Londres, marié pour la troisième fois et père d’une petite fille. Ses livres ne se vendent pas, et il devient chauffeur de taxi pour subvenir aux besoins de sa famille. Puis il s’installe en France, où il achète une bastide du XVe siècle dans le Sud-Ouest. Là, il est, tour à tour, ouvrier agricole, bûcheron, couvreur.

Après dix ans de silence, Robin Cook revient à l’écriture avec Sick Transit (Le Soleil qui s’éteint , 1982) et connaît enfin le succès en 1983 avec He Died with His Eyes Open (Il est mort les yeux ouverts ), porté à l’écran par Jacques Deray sous le titre On ne meurt que deux fois . Ce roman est le premier d’un cycle de six, dont le titre générique est The Factory (L’Usine ). L’“usine” est un service de police concernant “les décès non éclaircis”, et son héros est un “flic” anonyme qui s’identifie aux victimes, se révolte contre la souffrance et le mal, personnifié par des tueurs psychopathes qu’il traque sans relâche. Font partie de ce cycle: The Devil’s Home on Leave (Les mois d’avril sont meurtriers , 1984), How the Dead Live (Comment vivent les morts , 1986), I Was Dora Suarez (J’étais Dora Suarez , 1990), Dead Man Upright (Le Mort à vif , 1993) et Not till the Red Fog Rises (Quand se lève le brouillard rouge , 1994). Robin Cook est également l’auteur d’un roman noir se situant à Paris (Cauchemar dans la rue , 1988) et d’une autobiographie (Mémoire vive , 1992).

Robin Cook écrivait: “... S’il est vrai que parfois j’entre en désespoir (et c’est vrai), c’est le défi du roman noir tel que je le vois. Je peuple mes livres de gens gaspillés qui ne comprennent pas pourquoi ils doivent descendre la pente sans même une plainte. Mes livres sont pleins de gens qui, sachant qu’ils ont été abandonnés par la société, la quittent d’une façon si honteuse pour elle qu’elle ne fait jamais mention d’eux.” Lui-même avait qualifié son chef-d’œuvre, J’étais Dora Suarez , de “roman en deuil”.
