Ayres, Pam

(1947- )
   English writer of humorous poetry and entertainer who has appeared on television and national radio, reciting her poems in broad Oxfordshire dialect. Born in Oxfordshire, Ayres worked in the Civil Service for MI5, the Security Service, and served in the Women's Royal Air Force. In 1975 the television talent show Opportunity Knocks gave her publicity. She has published several books of poems, toured in a one-woman stage show, hosted her own TV show and performed her stage show for Her Majesty, the Queen. She was identified as the fifth best-selling poet in Britain during 1998 and 1999 and was awarded the Member of the British Empire for services to literature and entertainment in 2004. Her poems are mostly concerned with the details of everyday life. "I Wish I'd Looked After Me Teeth" was voted in the Top 10 of a BBC poll to find the nation's "100 Favorite Comic Poems."
