Thomas "Tom" Michael Fletcher (born 17 July 1985 in Harrow, London), is one of the lead vocalists and guitarists in the British pop rock/pop punk band McFly, along with fellow band members Danny Jones, Dougie Poynter and Harry Judd. McFly rose to fame after fellow teen-pop band Busted helped launch them by inviting them to tour in March 2004.

McFly

Fletcher is the founding member, sometimes pianist, and rhythm guitarist of pop/punk band McFly, naming the band after the main character in his favourite film Back To The Future, Marty McFly [cite web|url=http://www.ilikemusic.com/interviews/-684 |title=McFly - Harry chats to ilikemusic.com|work= [http://www.ilikemusic.com ilikemusic.com] |accessdate=2007-11-23|month=September | year=2004] . McFly's formation came about when he auditioned for Bustedcite web |url=http://www.thebeatsbar.co.uk/ccinterviews/mcfly.html |title=McFly Interview by CMU's Chris Cooke |month=December | year=2005|accessdate=2007-11-23| work= [http://www.thebeatsbar.co.uk CMU Beats Bar] ] but lost out on the place to Charlie Simpson (who later went on to co-found post-hardcore band Fightstar), after the record label decided to have the band as a three-some rather than four-some, Fletcher states that he was in the band 'for approximately 24-hours'. Though the record label (Island) decided against offering Fletcher a place in Busted, they were intrigued by his song-writings talents, and later offered him a place on the Busted song-writing 'team', alongside bandmember (and already accomplished song-writer) James Bourne; Fletcher has since stated that it was Bourne who taught him how to 'properly' structure songs, and how to, 'come up with good, poppy melodies'.

During the writing project for Busted's second album (A Present for Everyone), Fletcher was asked, by the record label, if he was available to film auditions for a new band, V. It was at this time that Danny Jones and Fletcher met for the first time; Jones went to the audition mistaking the band (V) to be a Busted-esque band, rather than the conventional, all-singing, all-dancing, boyband, for which they were intended.cite web|url=http://arts.guardian.co.uk/fridayreview/story/0,,1266615,00.html |title=Mad about the boys |author=Alexis Petridis |accessdate=2007-11-23 |date=2004-07-23 |work=The Guardian] Fletcher was impressed with Jones's unique style, and so approached and invited him to write with himself and Bourne. When writing projects for Busted had come to an end, the two began collaborating for their own (as of yet, unnamed) band, and, eventually, moved into the InterContinental Hotel in London for 2 monthscite web|url=http://www.mcflyofficial.com/news/index.php?id=310 |title=Debut McFly album track by track |accessdate=2007-11-23 |work= [http://www.mcflyofficial.com McFlyOfficial.com] ] to concentrate on writing together. Bassist (Dougie Poynter) and drummer (Harry Judd) were subsequently recruited via a classified advertisement in the NME magazine. Both Essex lads, the pair turned up, coincidentally, at the same audition, and got to talking over their shared appreciation of the band The Starting Line, after Dougie Poynter noticed their name and logo was printed on Harry Judd's t shirt. The name McFly was eventually decided upon as band name, Fletcher proposed the idea, based on his love for the American science-fiction comedy "Back to the Future" trilogy and Michael J. Fox's character Marty McFly. McFly made it into the Guinness Book of World Records, beating The Beatles out of the slot for "the youngest band to have a début album go straight to number one". As of June 20th, McFly have released four albums in total, their latest () was primarily released as a supplement of the Mail On Sunday, the retail album version will be available as of 22nd September.

ongwriting

Tom Fletcher has written/co-written ten number-one singles: 'Crashed The Wedding' and 'Who's David' and 'Thunderbirds' for Busted. 'Five Colours in Her Hair' (Bourne, Jones, Fletcher), 'Obviously' (Fletcher, Jones, Bourne), 'All About You' (Fletcher), 'I'll Be OK' (Fletcher, Jones, Poynter), 'Please, Please' (Fletcher, Jones, Poynter, Judd), 'Star Girl' and 'Transylvania' (Poynter, Fletcher) were all written for his band McFly.

He has also co-written eight of the songs on Busted's second album, 'A Present for Everyone', as well as all but one ('Not Alone' - Jones) of the tracks on McFly's debut album, 'Room on the 3rd Floor'. The album shot straight to number one in the UK charts, as did the second album 'Wonderland'. The second album included the track 'She Falls Asleep', an epic track about a suicidal girl in which Fletcher sings and plays piano. He helped rewrite the theme tune for the newest 'Thunderbirds' along with James Bourne, which was a number one single for Busted. McFly's most recent number-one is (Transylvania-Poynter) which was a double A-side with the Jellyfish cover "Baby's Coming Back".

Acting and TV Appearances

Fletcher attended Sylvia Young Theatre School. He played the title role in the 1994 revival of the West End Musical, Oliver! at the London Palladium. He was also featured in a short film on AIDS awareness, appeared in a TV commercial for Curry's, and was once an extra in "EastEnders", kicking a football in the background. He played a character named Dean in Grange Hill, but was not a main character. Fletcher was also an extra on "The Ant and Dec Show", where he was sent to buy the boys their shopping. He has appeared briefly in the video for the 1995 Mike & The Mechanics song 'Over My Shoulder'. His voice was heard as "Spot" the dog in the Spot the Dog episode, Spot and his Grandparents Go to the Carnival.

Fletcher has also appeared, with the rest of McFly, in popular BBC drama series Casualty and in the 20th Century Fox film "Just My Luck" (2006), which also stars Lindsay Lohan and Chris Pine.

In 2006, Fletcher appeared in Never Mind the Buzzcocks. He was a guest on Phil Jupitus' team, the other being Alan Carr. The guest host for the edition was Jonathan Ross.
