VAUGHAN SARAH (1924-1990)

Lois Sarah Vaughan naît le 27 mars 1924 à Newark (New Jersey). Un père charpentier mais qui joue de la guitare, une mère blanchisseuse mais qui chante à l’église: il n’en fallait pas plus pour que s’ouvrent devant elle les portes de la musique. Pendant plus de huit ans — de 1931 à 1939 —, elle étudie le piano, l’orgue et le chant. Elle se révèle soudainement en avril 1943, le jour des amateurs à l’Apollo de Harlem.

En bouleversant son auditoire sur Body and Soul , non seulement elle remporte le prix (10 dollars!), mais, bien mieux, attire l’attention d’Ella Fitzgerald — qui n’avait pas débuté autrement en 1934 — et de Billy Eckstine. Earl Hines l’engage en 1943 comme chanteuse et deuxième pianiste dans une formation où s’illustrent déjà Charlie Parker et Dizzy Gillespie. En 1945, elle chante dans le sextet de John Kirby, se produit avec le Down Beat Club Septet de Tony Scott et retrouve, dans l’orchestre de Billy Eckstine, Dexter Gordon, Dizzy Gillespie et Art Blakey. C’est d’ailleurs avec eux qu’elle enregistre sa première chanson, I’ll Wait and Pray . Dès cette époque, Sarah Vaughan est la vedette des cabarets, concerts et festivals. En 1946, elle se joint au septet de Dizzy Gillespie et Leonard Feather, qui rassemblait entre autres Charlie Parker, Max Roach et Tadd Dameron, Depuis la fin des années 1940, Sarah Vaughan alterne jazz et répertoire plus commercial. Avec elle, la romance populaire la plus fade et convenue retrouve une inattendue noblesse. Ils ne s’y sont pas trompés ces grands musiciens qui se l’arrachent: Quincy Jones, Roy Haynes, Jimmy Cobb, Richard Davis, Count Basie, Miles Davis, Herbie Mann, Paul Quinichette, Cannonball Adderley, Kai Winding, Benny Carter et tant d’autres encore. Depuis le début des années 1960, les grands orchestres symphoniques américains — ceux de Boston, de Cleveland, de Los Angeles, de San Francisco — se battent pour jouer avec elle.

Ella Fitzgerald est née de la vague du swing, Sarah Vaughan surgit de celle du bop. Dotée d’une stupéfiante technique vocale, elle s’enivre de la plus étourdissante virtuosité. Une tessiture exceptionnelle lui permet des sauts de registre d’une rare amplitude. Habitée par le génie de l’improvisation, Sarah Vaughan est capable de toutes les audaces. Le scat le plus acrobatique semble fuser sans effort. Elle se révèle tout aussi admirable dans les ballades sophistiquées. Une extraordinaire maîtrise du volume et de la sonorité de sa voix ouvre devant elle une palette qui va du murmure aux effets de growl . Mais par-dessus tout plane cet inimitable timbre voilé dont la sensualité exercera longtemps encore un charme — au sens fort du terme — contre lequel il est vain de se défendre.
