WODEHOUSE PELHAM GRENVILLE (1881-1975)

Aussi typiquement «anglais» qu’il soit possible de l’imaginer, du moins en France, Pelham Grenville Wodehouse est le chantre d’une Angleterre délicieusement surannée, dans une œuvre où la légèreté de l’humour le dispute à la fertilité de l’imagination.

Il naît à Guilford, dans le Surrey. Il fait d’excellentes études à Dulwich College et, en 1902, il se rend à Londres, où il devient d’abord journaliste. Là, il révèle rapidement son talent d’humoriste. Il commence à publier de nombreuses nouvelles, destinées surtout aux écoliers, qui brillent par un comique de situation, fondé le plus souvent sur le sentiment de l’absurde.

À partir de 1923, avec The Inimitable Jeeves , le personnage central de la plupart de ses romans est créé: c’est Jeeves, l’inimitable valet de Bertie Wooster. Parmi les nombreux titres qui suivront, citons: Carry on Jeeves , 1925; Very Good Jeeves , 1930; Thank You, Jeeves , 1934. Au sein de la riche et oisive société édouardienne dans laquelle tout arrive sauf la tragédie, à la Belle Époque, tandis que Mr. Mulliner rabâche la grandeur de la noblesse britannique et que lord Emsworth est le plus distrait des vieux lords distraits, une multitude de personnages pittoresques vont et viennent. Bertie Wooster, pour sa part, a le don de se fourrer dans des situations inextricables, dont il sort bien entendu, grâce aux interventions astucieuses de son valet, qui est superbement le maître à penser du couple. Il importe peu de savoir si une société telle que Wodehouse nous la dépeint a vraiment existé. La sûreté avec laquelle l’intrigue est construite, l’ironie dont ne se départent jamais ni l’auteur ni son personnage suffisent à créer une atmosphère qui enchantera pour quelques heures le lecteur complice. Ajoutons que Wodehouse a su jouer d’un langage qu’il maîtrise parfaitement pour traduire tout le formalisme et l’aspect artificiel d’une époque somme toute facile à caricaturer.
