Dialogue Gap. Why Communication Isn't Enough and What We Can Do About It, Fast

The book that bridges the chasm between communication and understanding in negotiations For years Peter Nixon worked with people from all walks of life, teaching them the art of negotiation. But it soon became apparent that the issue was not negotiation itself, but dialogue between parties. We have become experts at sending information—via email, text message, Internet, TV, and other forms of media, communicating, but not engaging, in an active dialogue defined by collaborative thinking. In Dialogue Gap, Nixon explores this growing disconnect and its significance in an increasingly globalized world where the ability to engage with others—in order to address issues like climate change, cultural differences, etc.—has become essential. Helps the reader differentiate communication and dialogue Explores the make-up and causes of the «Dialogue Gap» and what constitutes «good» dialogue (the right people talking about theright issues in the right way at the right time and in the right place) Identifies the most common reasons people don't dialogue effectively and provides helpful tips on how to engage in more effective, productive dialogues Effective dialogue is essential for general success, ensuring that all key stakeholders—in business, politics, or elsewhere—get what they want in the most efficient and productive way possible. Looking at successful and failed dialogues the author has experienced first-hand in Asia, Europe, North America, the Caribbean, and the Middle East in both the public and private sector from across industries, Dialogue Gap provides essential information for making the most of your interactions with others.

The Hon. Peter James Nixon AO (b. 22 March 1928) is a former Australian politician. cite web |url=http://www.aph.gov.au/library/handbook/historical/representatives/makin.price.htm |title=Parliamentary Handbook: Historical Information on the Australian Parliament |format= |work= |accessdate=2008-06-17]

Born in Orbost, Victoria, Nixon was a grazier and company director prior to gaining Country Party pre-selection for the rural Division of Gippsland, following the sudden death of the original Country Party candidate. He was first elected at the 1961 election. Easily returned at subsequent elections to the safe Country Party seat, Nixon quickly became a senior member of the Country Party and first entered the ministry as Minister for the Interior in October 1967 before moving to the Minister for Shipping and Transport portfolio in 1971 under John Gorton. He is mentioned in the song Gurindji Blues, saying "Buy your land back, Gurindji" referring to his assessment of the Wattie Creek land rights strike. In opposition, Nixon was a prominent figure in persuading his National Party colleagues to help pass Australian Labor Party legislation their coalition partner opposed. This helped prove to voters the National Party's independence from the Liberal Party of Australia and in cases such as when the Nationals supported Labor's policy on educational grants to public schools, helped to show the National Party's connection with core voter issues. Nixon was also a long time critic of what he saw as bias by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation against the National Party.

Following the Coalition victory in 1975, Nixon served as Minister for Transport until 1979 and then Minister for Primary Industry. On the floor of parliament, Nixon was known for trading insults with opposition members and particularly his verbal stoushes with Fred Daly.

Following his retirement from politics in 1983, Nixon returned to the business world, including spending five years from 1986 as a commissioner of the Australian Football League (AFL). In 1996, he was chosen to chair a joint Commonwealth-State inquiry into the Tasmanian economy. The report became known as the "Nixon Report: Tasmania into the 21st Century".
