Иван Федоров - первый русский печатник. В 1553 г. Иоанн IV приказал строить в Москве особый дом для типографии; но последняя была открыта только в 1563 г.; когда в ней и начали работать первые русские печатники Иван Федоров и Петр Мстиславец. Через два года ими был окончен печатанием "Апостол". Тотчас же по выходе "Апостола" начались гонения со стороны переписчиков на печатников, и Иван Федоров и Петр Мстиславец должны были бежать в Литву, где их радушно принял гетман Хоткевич, который в своем имении Заблудове основал типографию. Первой книгой, отпечатанной в Заблудовской типографии с помощью Ивана Федорова и Петра Мстиславца, было "Учительное евангелие" (1568). Любя свое дело, Иван Федоров, с целью продолжения его, переселился в Львов и здесь, в основанной им типографии, напечатал второе издание "Апостола" (1574). Через несколько лет его пригласил к себе князь Константин Острожский в г. Острог, где он напечатал, по поручению князя, знаменитую "Острожскую Библию", первую полную Библию на славяно-русском языке. Вскоре после этого "друкарь москвитин" скончался в предместье г. Львова, в страшной нищете (дек. 1583). Ср. Бахтиаров "История книги на Руси" (СПб., 1890). В. Р.
