La vie de Dekker est très mal connue; il est mentionné pour la première fois comme auteur de théâtre par Philip Henslowe en l’année 1598. Vivant de sa plume, il a participé à la rédaction d’au moins quarante-deux pièces. Sa facilité à construire des intrigues dramatiques n’allait pas sans imperfections. Au cours de la querelle connue sous le nom de «guerre des poètes» ou de «guerre des théâtres», il fut tourné en ridicule par Jonson dans Le Poétereau (The Poetaster , 1601); Dekker lui répondit par sa Satiromastix (1602), écrite en collaboration avec John Marston.

Des cinq pièces qui sont entièrement de la plume de Dekker, la plus connue est Le Jour de fête du cordonnier (The Shoemaker’s Holiday , 1599), qui reprend une intrigue de L’Aimable Artisan (The Gentle Craft ) de Thomas Deloney.

Utilisant aussi bien la satire que la description réaliste pour dépeindre l’injustice, l’infortune, la méchanceté, sans se départir d’un humanisme tolérant, Dekker nous montre un Londres bourgeois, peuplé de citoyens aisés et de valets de comédie, plein d’insolence envers la monarchie et la noblesse. Observateur sagace, il relève tous les détails de la vie quotidienne qui traduisent les profonds changements économiques et sociaux de l’époque.

La vigueur de sa prose de pamphlétaire se révèle, en 1603, dans L’Année merveilleuse (The Wonderful Year ), un des premiers ouvrages qui traitent de la grande peste de Londres. Entre 1613 et 1619, Dekker fut emprisonné pour dettes. Cette expérience personnelle a peut-être inspiré les six scènes de prison qui se trouvent dans la série des Caractères (Characters ) qui a été publiée anonymement en 1616 par Thomas Overbury.
