Dave Gurney, the most decorated homicide detective in the history of the NYPD, is pulled out of retirement once again when his former partner Jack Hardwick comes to him with a puzzling case. A real estate developer with outsize political ambitions has been murdered, shot by an assassin during his mother's funeral. The developer's unfaithful wife has been convicted and sentenced to life in prison--except Jack's convinced she's been framed, and he wants Dave to help him prove it. Gurney starts investigating, and soon uncovers a number of oddities in the prosecution's case. As he digs further, increasingly twisted revelations come to light, and before long his actions have placed him on a collision course with two very dangerous men: a murderous cop driven by rage, and the world's scariest hit man, a terrifying Greek assassin known in the underworld as "Peter Pan."
