Тернер был одной из наиболее ярких фигур в романтической пейзажной живописи XIX века. Его творчество, чрезвычайно разнообразноепо стилистике, отмечено смелыми, опережавшими свое время поисками и открытиями. Он начал с традиционных для Англии XVIII века так называемых топографических пейзажей, главной задачей которых была точная передача портрета местности. Он работал акварелью, пользуясь предварительными зарисовками с натуры, которые делал во время своих пеших и водных путешествий.
