Nine Lives to Die: A Mrs. Murphy Mystery

Winter has come to Crozet, Virginia, bringing with it a fresh blanket of snow. Harry and her husband Fair are hip deep in their usual end-of-year activities: wrapping presents, distributing food to needy residents, and shopping for outfits for the Silver Linings youth organization's annual fundraising gala. But buried beneath the white stuff are dark secrets from Crozet's past--and Harry and her posse of pet detectives are determined to sniff them out. The truth will be revealed. A cold case will be solved. And a twenty-five-year-old love triangle is about to get untangled. The weather outside may be frightful, but Harry and her four-legged friends refuse to be spooked off the case.

Early life

Brown was born in Hanover, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Florida, and as of 2004 lives outside Charlottesville, Virginia.

In the 1960s, Brown attended the University of Florida but transferred. She took an administrative position with the fledgling National Organization for Women, but angrily resigned in February 1970 over Betty Friedan's anti-gay remarks and NOW's attempts to distance itself from lesbian organizations. She played a leading role in the "Lavender Menace" zap of the Second Congress to Unite Women on May 1, 1970, which protested Friedan's remarks and the exclusion of lesbians from the women's movement.Related by Brown in her autobiography "Rita Will".]

In the early 1970s, she became a founding member of The Furies Collective, a lesbian feminist newspaper collective which held that heterosexuality was the root of all oppression. Related by Brown in her autobiography "Rita Will".]

She has said, "I don't believe in straight or gay. I really don't. I think we're all degrees of bisexual." [ [http://www.time.com/time/arts/article/0,8599,1723482,00.html "Rita Mae Brown: Loves Cats, Hates Marriage", Andrea Sachs, Time Magazine, March 18 2008] ]
