Having a baby has become so complicated in the Western world today that not many women have the chance of simply doing what comes naturally. It has become increasingly difficult for a woman to find a doctor or midwife who will assure her of continuing support and service throughout her pregnancy and labor. These natural events can then sometimes turn into a distressing ordeal. The modern technology of obstetrics, with its blinking lights and humming machinery, is reassuring for some women but alarms many others. There has been a technological takeover of childbirth in recent years and women's bodies are now often regulated by space age technology and monitoring systems. As a result many mothers feel that it is not they, but the doctors, who are having the baby. Some obstetricians are convinced that their patients should not know more than is "good" for them and should simply give them their trust. It is a concept which this book implicitly questions.
