Acemoglu
Daron Acemoğlu (* 3. September 1967 in Istanbul) ist ein US-amerikanisch-türkischer Ökonom armenischer Abstammung. Sein Vater Kevork, der 1988 starb, war Jurist und Dozent an der Universität Istanbul. Seine Mutter Irma († 1991) war eine bekannte armenische Lyrikerin.
Leben
Acemoğlu ist Charles P. Kindleberger Professor für angewandte Ökonomik am Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Stand 2006). Ihm wurde die John Bates Clark Medal im Jahr 2005 verliehen. Seinen Bachelorabschluss erhielt Acemoğlu 1989 von der Universität York und seinen Doktortitel 1992 von der London School of Economics and Political Science. Als Forscher ist er insbesondere in den Bereichen Politische Ökonomie, Entwicklungsökonomik, Wachstumstheorie, Technologie, Einkommens- und Lohnungleichheit, Humankapital und Ausbildung, sowie Arbeitsmarktökonomik tätig.
Sein im Jahr 2000 zusammen mit Simon Johnson und James A. Robinson veröffentlichter Aufsatz The Colonial Origins of Comparative Development: An Empirical Investigation (NBER Working Paper 7771) rief eine interessante Debatte hervor zwischen Acemoglu und Jeffrey Sachs über die Ursachen von Unterentwicklung. Im Unterschied zu Sachs, der Unterentwicklung vor allem auf geographische Faktoren zurückführt, unterstreicht Acemoğlu die Bedeutung von Institutionen. Acemoğlu et al argumentierten anhand von Daten, dass schlechte institutionelle Rahmenbedingungen einen Hauptgrund für die Unterschiede im Grad der wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung zwischen verschiedenen ehemaligen Kolonien darstellen.
