This remarkable and wide-ranging book is an inventory of symbols and the symbolic imagination. The editors and their fifteen contributors are drawn from a variety of scholarly backgrounds - including anthropology, ethnology, psychotherapy and art history. Jean Chevalier
Jean Chevalier, fut un detaché au Haut Commissariat à Beyrouth durant le Mandat français au Liban. Il a été doyen de la faculté de droit de l’Université Saint-Joseph, et par suite detaché à l’institut français au Caire. En 1929, il cherche en vain, a reunir tous les libanais autour de la loi civile de 1912 sur les terres amiris. Cette ancienne loi ottomane permetait aux filles d’hériter a parts égales avec les garçon sur les terres amiris. Son projet de loi fut vite heurté a un double défi. D’une part, la comparaison avec le droit musulman. Et d’autre part la comparaison du droit libanais au droit francais: le systeme libanais se fonde sur la transmition de la propriété pour eviter la vacance de l’hérédité, alors que le droit français consacre, lui, la continuation de la personne du défunt en d’autre termes, la succetion du defunt lui-meme, est, pour le perpetuer et prendre en charge ses obligations.

Alain Gheerbrant, né le 27 décembre 1920 à Paris, est un poète et un explorateur français.

Après avoir été brièvement éditeur d'avant-garde (il est notamment l'un des créateurs de l'édition K, qui fut la première à publier "Soleil cou coupé" d'Aimé Césaire), Alain Gheerbrant a dirigé, de 1948 à 1950, l'expédition Orénoque-Amazone, dont il a tiré son récit de voyage : L'Expédition Orénoque-Amazone, paru en 1952. C'est lui et son équipe qui, entre 1948 et 1950, entreprennent la première traversée de la Sierra Parima, jusqu'alors « enfer vert absolument impénétrable » et seulement peuplé de tribus indiennes inconnues du monde blanc. À cette occasion, il établit un contact pacifique avec les Indiens Yanomami qu'on appelait alors Guaharibos.
Il a réalisé de nombreux reportages dans le monde entier et a publié, en collaboration avec Jean Chevalier (1906–1993), un Dictionnaire des symboles, réédité à 19 reprises entre 1982 et 1997.
