A skilled networker, Zoffany established himself at the court of George III and Queen Charlotte soon after his arrival in England from his native Germany. At the same time, he befriended the leading actor David Garrick and through him became the foremost portrayer of Georgian theatre. His brilliant effects and deft style were well suited to theatricality of all sorts, enabling him to secure patronage in England and on the continent. Following a prolonged visit to Italy he travelled to India, where he quickly became a popular and established member within the circle of Warren Hastings, the governor-general. Zoffany's Indian paintings are among his most spectacular and allowed him to return to England enriched and warmly welcomed. This volume provides a sparkling overview of his finest works. Career
Postle is an accomplished British author. He served as a curator at the Tate Collection, and Head of British Art to 1900. He has published books on British art from the 18th to the 20th century.[1] In 2004, Postle served as a curator for Tate Britain's exhibit Year of the Garden which marks the bicentenary of the Royal Horticultural Society in London.[2] Prior to joining the Tate, Postle served as Director of the University of Delaware's London Centre and an Associate Professor of Art History for 5 years.[3][4]
In 1981, Postle received his MA from the Courtauld Institute of Art at the University of London in the United Kingdom [5] and received a degree in Art History from the University of Nottingham [6]
Awards and recognition
In 2008, Postle was elected as a fellow to the Society for Antiquaries of London.[7]
