Writing career

While employed at the School of Practical Arts in Boston Godfrey published several literary works. These works include the "ingenious scientific novel" [cite web|date=October 24, 1908 |title=The Week's News of Boston Books |url=http://query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9E03E0DC1739E333A25757C2A9669D946997D6CF |publisher=The New York Times |accessdate=2008-02-23] "The Man Who Ended War" in 1908 and "Elementary Chemistry" in 1909. Drexel Institute

Sometime after moving to Philadelphia Godfrey was commissioned to survey the Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry's facility. The original intent of the survey was possibly to see if the Institute would be appropriate for the "training [of] city employees." [cite book|last=McDonald |first= Edward D. |coauthors = Edward M. Hinton |title =Drexel Institute of Technology 1891 - 1941 | publisher = Haddon Craftsmen, Inc. |date=1942 |pages = p. 53 |isbn = 1406763748] As a result of his survey he recommended that the institute be restructured internally. He was then offered the presidency of the Institute by the Board of Trustees and assumed office on December 1, 1913. During his presidency, per his survey, Godfrey reorganized the Institute by consolidating departments, creating three schools, and standardizing the programs of study into two and four year programs.cite web|date=November 17, 2005 |title=Hollis Godfrey administration records |url=http://www.library.drexel.edu/archives/collections/godfreyadministrationabstract.html |publisher=Drexel University Archives and Special Collections |accessdate=2008-02-23] In January 1919 Godfrey developed the cooperative educational system, what is now The Ultimate Internship, in the School of Engineering. Godfrey resigned on October 1, 1921.

Advisory commission and later life

In 1916, during his tenure at Drexel, Godfrey was selected by President Woodrow Wilson to be an advisory member for the Council of National Defense, an organization formed to coordinate resources and industry for national security. [cite web|date=October 12, 1916 |title=President Names Defense Advisors |url=http://query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9C06EFD6153AE633A25751C1A9669D946796D6CF |publisher=The New York Times |accessdate=2008-02-23] Godfrey served in that capacity, advising in the area of engineering and education, from 1916 to 1918. In his last year at Drexel he established the Council of Management Education in Boston in March 1920, following his resignation at Drexel he became chairman of the council. [cite web|date=December 27, 1920 |title=New Post for Dr. Godfrey |url=http://query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9A02E0DC143CE533A25754C2A9649D946195D6CF |publisher=The New York Times |accessdate=2008-02-23] He later went on to be president of the Engineering-Economics Foundation. [cite book|last=Ford |first=Henry |title=Dearborn Independent Magazine January 1926-May 1926 |publisher=Kessinger Publishing |date=2003 |pages=3 |isbn=0766159906] He died on January 17, 1936.
