EDWARDS JONATHAN (1703-1758)

Pasteur et philosophe calviniste américain. Né dans le Connecticut, Jonathan Edwards fit ses études à l’université Yale et fut très tôt influencé par la lecture de Locke; d’une brillante intelligence, il devient pasteur de la communauté congrégationaliste de Northampton (Mass.) en 1727. Sa prédication, dans laquelle il s’oppose aux tendances arminiennes qui sont à l’œuvre dans son Église, conduit d’abord au Réveil au sein de sa communauté (A Narrative of the Work of God in the Conversion of Many Hundred Souls ..., 1736), puis au Grand Réveil de 1740-1742, auquel prend part aussi G. Whitefield. Ses exigences disciplinaires l’opposant à sa communauté, il se rend, en 1751, à Stockbridge (Mass.), où il s’intéresse aux Indiens. Il y rédige aussi de nombreux traités théologiques et philosophiques, sur le péché originel, sur l’histoire de la rédemption, notamment deux grands ouvrages: Inquiry into the Modern Prevailing Notions Respecting That Freedom of the Will Which Is Supposed to Be Essential to Moral Agency (1754) et The End for Which God Created the World . Il cherche à y définir l’harmonie qui peut s’établir entre une affirmation très stricte de la prédestination et la constatation et le respect de la faculté humaine du choix. Il meurt au moment où la présidence de Princeton College (N.J.) lui est confiée.
