Bosworth, Joseph
Bosworth, Joseph, engl. Philolog, geb. 1789 in Derbyshire, gest. 27. Mai 1876 in Oxford, studierte in Aberdeen und Cambridge Theologie, wirkte als britischer Kaplan in Amsterdam und Rotterdam, erhielt 1839 an der Universität zu Cambridge den Grad eines Doktors der Theologie und ward 1857 Mitglied des Christ Church College und Professor des Angelsächsischen in Oxford. Er tat viel, um ein Interesse für altenglische Grammatik bei seinen Landsleuten zu wecken, und stiftete eine angelsächsische Professur für Cambridge. Von seinen sprachwissenschaftlichen Werken sind zu nennen: »Elements of Anglo-Saxon grammar« (Lond. 1823); »Origin of the Dutch« (1836); »Dictionary of the Anglo-Saxon language« (1838), sein auf Rasks und Grimms Forschungen beruhendes Hauptwerk, verbunden mit einer Skizze der angelsächsischen Grammatik; »King Alfred's Anglo-Saxon version of the historian Orosius« (1859, englisch übersetzt 1855); »The Gospels in Gothic of 360 and in Anglo-Saxon of 995« (mit Wiclifs und Tyndales englischer Übersetzung, 2. Aufl. 1873) u. a. Die von B. begonnene Neubearbeitung seines großen angelsächsischen Wörterbuchs wurde durch Toller 1882–98 herausgebracht.
