Charlotte Angas Scott
Charlotte Angas Scott (* 8. Juni 1858 in Lincoln (Lincolnshire), England; † 10. November 1931 in Cambridge) war eine britische Mathematikerin, die vor allem in den USA wirkte. Sie befasste sich hauptsächlich mit algebraischer und analytischer Geometrie.
Scott wurde als Tochter des Pfarrers (Kongregationalisten), Sozialreformers und Präsidenten des Lancashire College Caleb Scott geboren. Sie besuchte das Girton College an der Universität Cambridge (damals anfangs noch Hitchin College), wo sie mit einem Stipendium Mathematik studierte und nahm auch inoffiziell an den Tripos-Prüfungen in Cambridge teil (sie schnitt als achtbeste ihres Jahrgangs ab), obwohl offiziell keine Frauen bei den Prüfungen erlaubt waren. Bei der Verlesung der Prüfungsergebnisse wurde sie nicht erwähnt, allerdings riefen männliche Studenten an der ihr zukommenden Stelle ihren Namen (Scott of Girton). Danach lehrte sie am Girton College und studierte gleichzeitig an der Universität London, wo sie 1882 ihren Bachelor-Abschluss machte und 1885 mit Bestnoten bei Arthur Cayley promoviert wurde (D.Sc.). Im gleichen Jahr ging sie auf Empfehlung von Cayley in die USA zum gerade neu gegründeten Bryn Mawr College für Frauen, wo sie die mathematische Fakultät leitete. Sie bestand auf strengen Eingangsprüfungen und initiierte die Gründung des College Entrance Examination Board, wo sie danach Prüferin war. 1909 erhielt sie in Bryn Mawr einen persönlichen Lehrstuhl.
Sie war Gründungsmitglied der 1895 aus der New York Mathematical Society entstandenen American Mathematical Society, deren Vizepräsident sie 1905 war und deren Rat sie mehrere Jahre angehörte. 1899 wurde sie Mitherausgeberin des American Journal of Mathematics. Sie heiratete nie, besuchte aber häufig ihre Verwandten in England und ging 1925 offiziell in Bryn Mawr in den Ruhestand, betreute aber noch einige Jahre einige ihrer Studenten. Sie hatte sieben weibliche Doktorandinnen, die sie teilweise zum Zusatzstudium nach Göttingen schickte. Im Ruhestand ging sie zurück nach England und wohnte in Cambridge.
Sie war Mitglied der London Mathematical Society und der Deutschen Mathematiker Vereinigung (1898) sowie der mathematischen Gesellschaften in Edinburgh und Palermo.
