The Teachings of Don Juan

Серия: "-"

Thirty years ago the University of California Press published a remarkable manuscript by an anthropology student named Carlos Castaneda. "The Teachings of Don Juan" initiated a generation of seekers dissatisfied with the limitations of the Western worldview. Castaneda's now classic book remains controversial for the alternative way of seeing that it presents and the revolution in cognition it demands. In a series of fascinating dialogues, Castaneda sets forth his partial initiation with don Juan Matus, a Yaqui Indian shaman from the state of Sonora, Mexico. He describes Don Juan's perception and mastery of the" non-ordinary reality" and how peyote and other plants sacred to the Mexican Indians were used as gateways to the mysteries of" dread", "clarity", and" power" .

Castaneda, Carlos

▪ 1999

Peruvian-born anthropologist and writer (b. Dec. 25, 1925/31?, Cajamarca, Peru—d. April 27, 1998, Westwood, Calif.), was considered a father of the New Age movement for his series of books based on the mystical secrets of a Yaqui Indian shaman. Though critics claimed the works were more fiction than fact, they became international best-sellers, translated into some 17 languages. An enigmatic figure who refused to be photographed or recorded, Castaneda offered conflicting autobiographical information, and much of his early life was unclear. Though he claimed to have been born in São Paulo, Braz., U.S. immigration records listed his birthplace as Cajamarca. It was known, however, that in 1951 he moved to the U.S., where he studied anthropology at the University of California, Los Angeles (Ph.D., 1973). During a trip to Arizona in the early 1960s, he met Don Juan Matus, a Yaqui who allegedly could manipulate time and space. Castaneda became his apprentice, and the two men embarked on a series of drug-fueled adventures. In 1965 Castaneda returned to Los Angeles and began writing about his experiences. The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge was published in 1968 and quickly became a best-seller. With its eloquent descriptions of "non-ordinary reality," it proved particularly popular with American youth disillusioned with the Vietnam War. A series of books followed, including A Separate Reality: Further Conversations with Don Juan (1971) and Journey to Ixtlan: The Lessons of Don Juan (1972). His growing fame made Castaneda increasingly reclusive, and his death was not revealed for nearly two months.
