CAPOTE TRUMAN (1924-1984)

Né à La Nouvelle-Orléans, Truman Capote passe son enfance sur la plantation d’une de ses tantes qui l’élève, après le divorce de ses parents. Il fait ses études en Louisiane et dans l’Alabama, tout en faisant de nombreux métiers pour gagner sa vie. Il voyage ensuite à travers les États-Unis. Son premier roman, Les Domaines hantés (Other Voices, Other Rooms , 1948), fait sensation. Bien que Capote ne se considère pas lui-même comme un écrivain sudiste, il reste fidèle au roman gothique, genre traditionnel du Sud. Dans une atmosphère mystérieuse et trouble où rêve et réalité se confondent et deviennent cauchemardesques, Joel Knox parcourt à la recherche de son père un itinéraire qui le mène de l’enfance à la maturité, de la maison paternelle à un mystérieux hôtel, où il aura avec son cousin Randolf la révélation de son homosexualité. Avec La Harpe d’herbe (The Grass Harp , 1951), dont une pièce de théâtre est tirée en 1952, puis avec Diamants sur canapé (Breakfast at Tiffany’s , 1958), son meilleur livre peut-être, Capote s’éloigne de plus en plus de la «couleur locale» du Sud et révèle dans l’observation du demi-monde new-yorkais sa vivacité, son style et son sens de l’humour. Le ton, élégant et frivole, laisse deviner derrière la fantaisie et le charme une sorte de gravité désinvolte et moderne.

Capote publie en outre des nouvelles «surréalisantes», Un arbre de nuit (A Tree of Night , 1949), et se lance dans le reportage. Il suit la troupe noire de l’opéra Porgy and Bess lors de sa tournée en Union soviétique et en tire Les muses parlent (The Muses Are Heard , 1956), que publie d’abord le New Yorker . On peut citer également Local Color (1950), un recueil de photographies et d’essais, et Observations , en collaboration avec le photographe Richard Avedon.

Mais Truman Capote connaît la pleine célébrité avec De sang-froid (In Cold Blood , 1966). Après six ans d’enquête personnelle, il établit de façon extrêmement détaillée l’histoire de deux jeunes meurtriers depuis leur enfance; il raconte leur crime, l’assassinat d’une famille de fermiers dans le Kansas, et les suit jusqu’à leur jugement et leur condamnation. Autorisé à les interviewer en prison, il a même tenu à assister à leur exécution, avant d’en faire le récit. Si le non-roman (non-fiction novel ), genre que Capote se targue d’avoir inventé, est captivant, si la rigueur de la documentation et la virtuosité du style suscitent indéniablement un nouveau type d’écriture, la démarche de l’auteur a pu toutefois inspirer une certaine réserve. Le goût du détail, l’hyperréalisme du récit ne trahissent-ils pas aussi une attirance certaine pour le morbide? Truman Capote a également écrit une comédie musicale et plusieurs scénarios de films.

Après un long passage à vide, Capote revient à la fiction avec une série de récits, Music for Chameleons (Musique pour caméléons , 1979), où miroitent ses différents styles. Il meurt avant d’avoir pu achever le livre auquel il travaillait, Answered Prayers .
