Mysteries and Conspiracies. Detective Stories, Spy Novels and the Making of Modern Societies

The detective story, focused on inquiries, and in its wake the spy novel, built around conspiracies, developed as genres in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. During the same period, psychiatry was inventing paranoia, sociology was devising new forms of causality to explain the social lives of individuals and groups and political science was shifting the problematics of paranoia from the psychic to the social realm and seeking to explain historical events in terms of conspiracy theories. In each instance, social reality was cast into doubt. We owe the project of organizing and unifying this reality for a particular population and territory to the nation-state as it took shape at the end of the nineteenth century. Thus the figure of conspiracy became the focal point for suspicions concerning the exercise of power. Where does power really lie, and who actually holds it? The national authorities that are presumed to be responsible for it, or other agencies acting in the shadows– bankers, anarchists, secret societies, the ruling class? Questions of this kind provided the scaffolding for political ontologies that banked on a doubly distributed reality: an official but superficial reality and its opposite, a deeper, hidden, threatening reality that was unofficial but muchmore real. Crime fiction and spy fiction, paranoia and sociology – more or less concomitant inventions – had in common a new way of problematizing reality and of working through the contradictions inherit in it. The adventures of the conflict between these two realities – superficial versus real – provide the framework for this highly original book. Through an exploration of the work of the great masters of detective stories and spy novels – G.K. Chesterton, Arthur Conan Doyle, John Le Carré and Graham Greene among others – Boltanski shows that these works of fiction and imagination tell us something fundamental about the nature of modern societies and the modern state.

Luc Boltanski

Luc Boltanski (* 1940) is the leading figure in the new "pragmatic" school of French sociology (see: French Pragmatism). He is a professor at the [http://www.ehess.fr École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales] , Paris and the founder of the [http://gspm.ehess.fr/ Groupe de Sociologie Politique et Morale] .

He contributed to start the "political and moral sociology" framework. Political and moral sociology has gradually developed as a research programme –in the sense proposed by Lakatos– around a conceptual nucleus looking to construct a theory of action based on Durkheim's theory of moral fact, revising the inheritance of ‘methodological structuralism’ from the point of view of dynamics and processes. The research program stresses how, in many conflicts, the characteristics of the disputants change during the course of the conflict.

In the book he wrote with Laurent Thévenot, On Justification. The Economies of Worth, 2006, Princeton University Press, Boltanski argues that modern societies are not a single social order but an interweaving of multiple orders. Boltanski and Thévenot identify six "regimes of justification," systematic and coherent principles of evaluation. These multiple orders (civic, market, transcendence, fame, industrial, and domestic) are not bounded to particular social domains but coexist in the same social space -- as Boltanski and Thévenot persuasively demonstrate through a content analysis of texts used in managerial training in contemporary French corporations. Boltanski's current work explores a seventh "connectionist" regime (organized around the concept of flexible networks now prominent in the conception of "the Project") based on a systematic analysis of managerial science literature in the 1960s and 1990s.

In the book he wrote with Ève Chiapello, The New Spirit of Capitalism, London-New York, Verso, 2005, they develop the notion of "test" to indicate forms of conflict among the actors, with a variable degree of legitimacy . If the experiences following one another in conflict processes are legitimate, they firmly bind actors to claim the universality of their reasoning within certain limits, and to resort to a justifiable vocabulary of motives. However, legitimate tests are not always abundant in conflicts: tests which are not classified and which are not subject to the surveillance of a third party constitute forms of conflict which make it impossible to reach an agreement based on the merit of the argument, and thus establish a relation of force between the disputants. These are not tests of something, trials in which it is clear what the rules are and what is exactly put to trial, but they are tests of force. In this, therefore, conflicts are definable as sequences of tests subjected to a more or less rigorous classification, sequences of tests which activate an arena of actors made up of different scenes, each with its own timescale.

His work has significantly influenced sociology, political economy and social and economic history.
