Sylvia’s Lovers

Sylvia's Lovers is set during the French Revolutionary Wars in the remote whaling-port of Monkshaven in Yorkshire where the sea dominates the lives of the inhabitants. The people of Monkshaven hate the French, but they live in greater and more immediate fear of the callous press-gang, who snatch sailors returning from a whaling trip before they have even spoken to their friends or families. The story of a young woman caught between the attractions of two very different men. One of them is a whaling harpooner named Charley Kinraid, whose charm and vivacity have captured the heart of Sylvia Robson. But Sylvia's devoted cousin, Philip Hepburn, hopes to marry her himself.

GASKELL ELIZABETH (1810-1865)

Après avoir passé son enfance dans un village du Cheshire, Elizabeth Stevenson épouse un ministre du culte unitarien et s’installe à Manchester.

Son premier roman, Mary Barton , dit la misère de la grande ville vers le milieu du siècle. Sa publication en 1848, année de révolution, lui vaut un succès immédiat et les éloges de Dickens et de Carlyle. Dickens l’invite à collaborer à son magazine, Household Words , dans lequel est publiée sa seconde œuvre importante, Cranford (1853). Ce roman de la vie provinciale évoque, loin de tout sentimentalisme comme de toute satire, le village de son enfance, Knutsford, et les mille petits événements qui l’agitent sous une apparence de calme et d’immobilité. Ce roman reste son œuvre la plus populaire.

Elizabeth Gaskell revient ensuite au roman social, avec Ruth (1853), qui a pour sujet la réprobation dont est victime une femme séduite, puis avec Nord et Sud (North and South , 1855).

Elle publie une Vie de Charlotte Brontë (Life of Charlotte Brontë , 1857), où elle manifeste une admiration chaleureuse pour celle qui fut son amie. Cet ouvrage est à la fois une œuvre d’art et un document de première main. Certains considèrent que Femmes et filles (Wives and Daughters ), roman inachevé, est son chef-d’œuvre.
