Encounters, a multimedia course, is designed for beginner Chinese language learners from middle school to college. Produced in broadcast quality high definition video, Encounters provides authentic scenes filmed in Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an and Yangshuo. It presents how young Chinese people live, work and love while also showing the conflicts and communication between young people from different countries. The Encounters program includes Student Book 1&2, Annotated Instructor's Edition 1&2, Character Writing Workbook 1&2, Screenplay 1&2, DVD Lab Pack 1&2 (an 8-hour TV series, a 10-hour documentary, a hundred language task video segments, and audio blogs and rap songs). Encounters employs communicative techniques and encourages students to learn through practical exercises, task-based techniques and cultural segments. Volume 1 covers 10 topics in real-life context and helps the students master the basic language skills and words in order to express simple ideas without difficulty. After learning the first volume, learners will have a command of around 800 Chinese characters and 1000 words, achieving the level of HSK3. Volume 2 further expands the contents of the first volume (e. g. getting to know each other) while also introducing new and exciting material (e. g. shopping, making travel plans, and dining out). This volume will challenge the learner's listening, speaking, reading and writing abilities. Learners will read long paragraphs and draw information from them. After learning this volume, learners will have a command of around 1200 Chinese characters and 1600 words, achieving the level of HSK4. Encounters 3&4 are coming out soon! Chinese Edition.
