Brain insult is typically followed by a latent period (i. e., epileptogenesis) during which various neurobiological changes occur, including neurodegeneration, gliosis, neurogenesis, angiogenesis, alterations in the extracellular matrix, molecular changes in cellular membranes and axonal sprouting.
