The main cause of growth of informal settlement in Eldoret is industrialization,population growth, urban centre growth, land tenure system and high land prices and house rents. Comparing the two estates, poor solid waste management was experienced in Huruma while poor liquid waste management was severe in Munyaka estate. Congestion/overcrowding and lack of water supply were evidenced during the study. Water supply was found not to be the major problem in the areas of study. Eldoret town unlike other urban centres in Kenya has adequate supply of water, especially with the construction of Chebara dam that increased the supply of water to the municipality. Housing remains a fundamental aspect of human life, for it determines the health, economic position and social status of individuals and therefore the need to provide for a mechanism that will ensure that all residents have access to affordable and decent housing with good environmental conditions.
