Kahekümnenda sajandi teisel poolel näis külm sõda paratamatusena ja selle lõppu ei osanud ette näha ükski lääne ega Nõukogude poliitik. Ameerika Ühendriikide ja Nõukogude Liidu vastasseis kõikvõimalikel elualadel tundus vääramatu. Ka pärast 1985. aasta märtsi, kui NSV Liidu uueks juhikssai Mihhail Gorbatšov, ei tundunud tuumasõja oht esialgu sugugi vähenevat. Kõigest neli aastat hiljem oli aga Berliini müür langenud ja perestroika oli toonud nn sotsialismileeris kaasa sellised muutused, mis peagi päädisid NSV Liidu lagunemisega. Arhiivimaterjalidele toetuva põhjaliku uurimistöö tulemusena on Briti akadeemia liige ja Oxfordi St Antony’s College’i professor Robert Service maalinud haarava pildi, kuidas president Ronald Reaganil ja Mihhail Gorbatšovil ning USA riigisekretär George Shultzil ja NSV Liidu toonasel välisministril Eduard Ševardnadzel kujunesid ootamatult lähedased suhted, millest arenes hea koostöö ja mis omakorda tõi kaasa põhjalikud muutused kogu maailmas.
