Его первая книга «Конец веры» вышла в 2004 году и получила награду PEN/Martha Albrand Award 2005. Его сочинения печатаются в многочисленных печатных изданиях и на интернет-форумах. Харисс имеет степень бакалавра философии из Стэнфордского Университета и в настоящее время пишет докторскую диссертацию по нейробиологии. Предметами его исследований является использование магнитно-резонансной томографии для изучения нейробиологических основ веры, недоверия и неуверенности. До этого Харрис провел кропотливое исследование восточных и западных религиозных традиций. Его вторая книга «Письмо к христианской нации» была издана в сентябре 2006 года.

Сэм Харрис начал писать «Конец веры» во времена, по его словам, «коллективного горя и изумления», после нападений 11 сентября 2001. Книга включает всестороннюю критику всех стилей религиозной веры за то, что они не стремятся к совместимости, порождая конфликты цивилизаций и препятствуя созданию здорового мирового сообщества.

Политические взгляды
Как либерал в североамериканском понимании Сэм Харрис имеет безупречную репутацию. Он выступает за прогрессивное налогообложение (то есть чтобы богатые платили побольше, а бедные поменьше). Стоит за то, чтобы легализовать наркотики и разрешить однополые браки. Он критикует администрацию Буша за расточительность, за запрет на медицинское использование стволовых клеток, за то, как она ведет войну в Ираке и т.д.
