Academic Encounters: American Studies: Intermediate: Student's Book

Производитель: "CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS"

Серия: "Academic Encounters"

Academic Encounters: American Studies uses a sustained-content approach to help students develop the skills they need to meet the demands of academic courses. The text engages students with academic readings, photos, graphs, and charts on stimulating topics from the field of American Studies that deal with important events and ideas in American history and culture that are relevant to American life today. Topics include government, race relations, the history of U. S. immigration, jazz and blues, movies, hip-hop, and the interplay of American culture and cultures from around the world. Exercises that accompany the lessons develop important reading skills such as reading for detail, skimming, reading critically, and applying what you have read. Students also learn study skills such as highlighting, note taking, and preparing for a quiz. Each chapter ends with a guided academic writing assignment. Tasks to build vocabulary and academic writing skills occur throughout the book. Academic Listening Encounters: American Studies is a listening, note-taking, and discussion text that focuses on the same content area as the reading, study-skills, and writing book described above. The listening book with student`s Audio CD, as well as the complete audio program for the listening book, are both available separately for purchase. The reading book and the listening book may each be used independently or they may be used together to form an integrated four-skills course.

History

Williams was born in Baltimore, Maryland. She began her music career young, taking piano lessons at the age of four and began classical training at the Peabody Conservatory of Music when she was seven.[1][2] She moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania during her teens and began playing with the quintet of Philly Joe Jones, the former Miles Davis drummer.

In 1977, she moved to San Francisco, California, where she played in various house bands, such as for Eddie Harris, Dexter Gordon, Tony Williams, and Stan Getz. She also became the house pianist for Keystone Korner. She recorded for Candid, Fantasy, Timeless, Concord, Jazz Focus, Hep, and MaxJazz record labels. She began her own label in 1997, called Red and Blue Recordings, on which to release her own original material. She also owns her own publishing company, JJW Music, and runs her own Internet CD mail-order business, jessicawilliams.com.

She is a three-time Grammy Award Nominee and holds a Fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation for composition.

She appeared at the 2004 and 2006 "Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festivals" at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

She currently resides in Washington.
