Однако строительство заканчивается на котловане будущего фундамента дома, дальше дело не идёт, и к строителям приходит понимание тщетности создания чего-либо нового на обломках уничтоженного старого, а возможно, и осознание того, что цель не всегда оправдывает средства. На другом плане сюжета произведения бездомная девочка Настя, являющаяся воплощением будущего, будущих жильцов дома, живущая на стройке (что символично, ввиду отсутствия кроватей строители подарили девочке два гроба, отобранных имипредварительно у крестьян один в качестве кровати, второй в качестве коробки для игрушек) умирает, так и не дождавшись постройки общего дома для всех: светлая когда-то утопия, логически зайдя в тупик, неотвратимо превращается в жёсткую антиутопию.
