Гарди Томас

(Hardy) — современный английский романист, род. в 1848 г.; удачно дебютировал в 1871 г. романом "Desperate Remedies", вслед за которым появились "Under the Greenwood Tree", "A pair of Blue eyes", "Far from the Madding Crowd", "The Hand of Ethelbertha", "Wessex Tales" и др. Лучшим романом его считается "Far from the Madding Crowd", восхваляемый английской критикой за прекрасное изображение крестьянской жизни. Но роман этот далеко не заслуживает своей известности: удачны в нем только описания сельских работ, главным образом ухода за овцами. Новейший роман Г. "Tess of the d'Ubervilliers" (1892) наделал много шума своим необычным для английских читателей реализмом в духе "La Terre" Золя, хотя этот реализм — чисто внешнего свойства.
