  Reducido en la actualidad a una tarjeta de identidad, el carné tuvo hace algún tiempo el valor de \'cuadernillo, libreta, tarjeta para anotar\', lo que el Diccionario académico define como \'librito de apuntaciones\', como se mantiene en la expresión carné de baile, que era la libretita que guardaban las damas en las fiestas para anotar los nombres de los sucesivos compañeros de baile.
  Fue de este añejo valor, precisamente, de donde vendría el origen de la palabra, debida al francés carnet, término de vieja raigambre en ese idioma desde hace más de cinco siglos, y que tenía el valor de \'cuaderno\', a través de las antiguas formas caern o quaer, adaptación al idioma de la palabra latina quaternio, que significaba \'grupo de cuatro hojas\', y que, por vía directa, es el origen de nuestro cuaderno.
