Книга: Annie Proulx «That Old Ace in the Hole»
Производитель: "Fourth Estate" At seven years old, Bob Dollar was left on his uncle Tam's doorstep with nothing more than a promise that his parents would send for him. But as Bob grows into a man above his doting-but-poor uncle's junk shop, news never arrives. With a thirst for knowledge, the now-grown Bob takes on the job of hog site scout for Global Pork Rind, sending him through the prairies and big cities of the American South. But some folks in the Texas panhandle don't like hog farms. With a fictitious cover and the advice to wear cowboy boots to assuage the locals, Bob must contend with me tough men and women dead set against hog farming and outsiders, including ancient Freda Beautyrooms, who controls a ranch he covets, and Ace Crouch, the windmiller who defies the hog farms. As Bob settles in at La Von Fronk's bunkhouse and lends a hand at Cy Frease's Old Dog Cafe, he finds himself forced to question everything. ISBN:978-0-00-715152-3 Издательство: "Fourth Estate" (2009)

Personal life and writing
Annie Proulx was born in Norwich,
A few years after receiving much attention for "The Shipping News", she had the following comment on her celebrity status: "It's not good for one's view of human nature, that's for sure. You begin to see, when invitations are coming from festivals and colleges to come read (for an hour for a hefty sum of money), that the institutions are head-hunting for trophy writers. Most don't particularly care about your writing or what you're trying to say. You're there as a human object, one that has won a prize. It gives you a very odd, meat-rack kind of sensation."
