Roald DAHL 1916-1990

Né en 1916 au pays de Galles de parents norvégiens, Roald Dahl vit une enfance peu facile: il perd sa sœur aînée puis son père, courtier maritime, à l’âge de trois ans. Il est élevé au pensionnat de Repton School dans le Derbyshire: expérience douloureuse qu’il relate dans l’un de ses deux écrits autobiographiques destinés aux enfants: Moi, Boy. À dix-huit ans, il renonce aux études universitaires et travaille pour la grande compagnie pétrolière Shell, qui l’envoie en 1937 en Afrique orientale. La guerre l’y surprend et il s’engage comme pilote dans la Royal Air Force. Il est gravement blessé en septembre 1940 en Libye: rescapé miraculeusement de son avion en flammes, il subira seize interventions chirurgicales et en sera profondément marqué. Cette période nourrit son second récit autobiographique: Escadrille 80. Avec humour, il affirmera que son imagination fertile lui est venue d’une «bosse» contractée lors de l’accident.

En 1942, Roald Dahl est attaché militaire à Washington, aux États-Unis, et écrit des nouvelles. Sa carrière d’écrivain commence avec un récit de guerre fait à l’écrivain C. S. Forrester, qui le proposera au Saturday Evening Post. Si son premier livre pour enfants, James et la grosse pêche , publié en 1961, ne rencontre pas un succès fulgurant, le deuxième, Charlie et la chocolaterie (1964), deviendra un best-seller de la littérature enfantine; cinq millions d’exemplaires en ont été vendus dans le monde. Peuplés de géants ou de nains – à la manière de Swift ou de Dickens –, de sorcières et de monstres, son œuvre donne le mauvais rôle aux parents, maîtres d’école... et aux adultes en général, pour la plus grande joie des enfants. L’univers de l’écrivain est cruel, mais son ton toujours humoristique. Il l’expliquait ainsi: «La vie est tellement dure, vraiment tellement dure. Il faut préparer les enfants à faire face au monde, leur donner un maximum d’atouts pour cela.» L’Énorme Crocodile (1976), La Potion magique de Georges Bouillon (1981), Le Bon Gros Géant: le B.G.G. – une abréviation qui fait fureur chez les enfants – (1982), Sacrées Sorcières (1983) ou encore Matilda (1988), autant de titres (illustrés par Quentin Blake, avec qui il forme un duo réussi) qui ont séduit les enfants. Roald Dahl aimait à dire: «Les enfants, il faut les passionner, sinon ils vous laissent tomber et vont regarder la télévision. J’essaie d’écrire des histoires qui les saisissent à la gorge, des histoires qu’on ne peut pas lâcher.»

Comme dans ses livres pour enfants, Roald Dahl cultivait dans les ouvrages qu’il destinait aux adultes un humour très noir. Mais ses recueils de nouvelles et ses romans (citons notamment Bizarre, bizarre , Kiss, Kiss ou, plus récemment, La Princesse et le braconnier) n’ont pas eu le retentissement mondial de ses romans pour la jeunesse.

Mais ce géant bourru d’un mètre quatre-vingt-quatorze avait plus d’une corde à son arc: pour le cinéma, il est l’auteur du scénario des Gremlins avec Walt Disney (en 1943) et de celui d’un James Bond, On ne vit que deux fois (1967), ainsi que d’un scénario non utilisé pour Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968). Nombre de ses nouvelles ont été adaptées pour la télévision, notamment sous le titre de The Tales of the Unexpected. Gloire nationale en Grande-Bretagne, Roald Dahl restera comme l’un des maîtres incontestés de la littérature enfantine mondiale, lui qui n’avait d’autre but que de faire aimer la lecture aux enfants.
