Patricia HIGHSMITH 1921-1995
Née le 19 janvier 1921 à Fort Worth (Texas), fille de divorcés, Mary Patricia Plangman ne connaît pas son père. Elle choisira pour nom de plume celui de son beau-père et deviendra Patricia Highsmith. Quittant le Texas pour New York, elle fait ses études à la Barnard University, d’où elle sort en 1942 avec le diplôme de Bachelor of Arts. Elle commence à écrire à seize ans et publie des nouvelles dans des journaux estudiantins. Au cours de ses études, à l’époque de la guerre d’Espagne et de la montée du nazisme, elle s’engage politiquement et participe à de nombreuses manifestations antifascistes.
Patricia Highsmith entreprend après la Seconde Guerre mondiale une découverte de l’Europe, qui l’amène de Salzbourg à Earl Soham (Suffolk), en passant par Positano. En Angleterre, elle passe quatre ans à concevoir et à peaufiner son premier roman de suspense, L’Inconnu du Nord-Express . Cette cynique histoire de crimes échangés, refusée par six maisons d’édition américaines, ne sera publiée qu’en 1950. Le livre, adapté à l’écran par Alfred Hitchcock en 1951, va apporter à son auteur, outre une popularité méritée, une aisance financière qui permettra à Patricia Highsmith de s’installer en France. Là, elle vit, solitaire, à Samois, près de Fontainebleau; elle quittera ce lieu en novembre 1970 pour Moncourt, village proche de Nemours, qu’elle juge plus calme et plus favorable à l’écriture.
Elle publie Le Meurtrier , puis l’étonnant Monsieur Ripley , qui lui vaudra en 1957 le grand prix de littérature policière. Tous les livres appartenant à cette série auront pour toile de fond de ténébreuses machinations criminelles. Mais, et c’est l’un des traits particuliers de cette romancière ambiguë, plus son succès grandit, plus elle se cache, recluse volontaire n’ayant pour compagnie que des chats. (Elle se rendra néanmoins en Angleterre pour recevoir en 1964 le Silver Dagger – poignard d’argent – décerné par la Crime Writers Association.)
Dans Monsieur Ripley , nous faisons la connaissance d’un jeune dévoyé n’hésitant pas à tuer pour parvenir à la réussite sociale. Tom Ripley reviendra dans Ripley et les ombres (1970), Ripley s’amuse (1974), adapté en 1977 par Wim Wenders sous le titre L’Ami américain , Sur les pas de Ripley (1980) et Ripley entre deux eaux (1992). Psychopathe de charme, totalement dénué d’états d’âme, Ripley assassine tous ceux qui, croit-il, menacent son idéal de vie bourgeoise. On peut rapprocher ce superbe indifférent de L’Étranger de Camus, mais il est surtout une projection de l’auteur elle-même. Le succès de cet antihéros ne se démentira pas au fil des années. Patricia Highsmith, dans cette saga, décrit les pires horreurs avec un détachement égal à celui de Ripley, en jouant d’un “second degré” savoureux. Comme son double, Patricia Highsmith s’amuse. Elle obtiendra d’ailleurs le grand prix de l’humour noir 1975 pour son recueil de nouvelles L’Amateur d’escargots .
Ce serait une erreur de ne considérer l’écrivain que sous l’angle de la “reine du crime”. Ses romans d’analyse psychologique sont également des réussites. Le Cri du hibou , Le Journal d’Édith (1977) et, surtout, Ces gens qui frappent à la porte (1983) dépeignent avec acuité des faits de société, que l’auteur dissèque jusqu’à leur conférer une valeur universelle.
Quant à l’aspect le plus secret de cette romancière-ermite, mais qui sous-tend son œuvre entière, deux livres le révèlent particulièrement. Carol (1952), publié à l’origine sous le pseudonyme passe-partout de Claire Morgan, relate avec discrétion une relation féminine homosexuelle. Aux États-Unis, les toutes-puissantes ligues de vertu auraient pu, à l’époque, en boycotter l’auteur. Ce roman de jeunesse sera réédité sous son vrai nom en 1985, avec un nouveau titre, Les Eaux dérobées . Le second, qui restera sans doute comme son testament spirituel, sera publié juste après sa mort, en 1995. Il s’agit de Small g , étude au microscope d’une petite communauté d’homosexuels de Zurich, décrite avec une réelle émotion et une totale sympathie. Revanche posthume d’une femme confinée au secret toute sa vie, et qui ne craint plus de se révéler au grand jour? Ou aboutissement logique d’une carrière placée, dès son début, sous le signe de l’équivoque? Aux lecteurs de répondre. Par les perspectives vertigineuses qu’il ouvre, ce roman éclaire d’un jour inédit l’œuvre de l’écrivain que Graham Greene, son plus fervent admirateur, définissait en ces termes: “Elle est poète de l’angoisse plus que de la peur.”
