MAUGHAM SOMERSET (1874-1965)

Né à Paris où son père était en poste à l’ambassade de Grande-Bretagne, Maugham eut une vie longue et mouvementée: agent secret et grand voyageur, il s’installa finalement en France, en 1946, au Cap-Ferrat. Écrivain extrêmement prolifique et cosmopolite: romans, nouvelles et théâtre; ce sont ses dons de conteur qui sont éclatants. Influencé par les naturalistes français, il écrivit des romans qui restent ses meilleures œuvres: Liza of Lambeth , 1897 (son expérience médicale), surtout Servitude humaine (Of Human Bondage , 1915), largement autobiographique; La Lune et six pence (The Moon and Six pence , 1919); Des gâteaux et de l’ale (Cakes and Ale , 1930). À ces grands titres, il faut ajouter Le Voile peint (The Painted Veil , 1925), Le Fil du rasoir (The Razor’s Edge , 1944) et Catalina (1948).

Grand maître de la nouvelle — on l’a appelé «le Maupassant anglais» —, ses Complete Short Stories remplissent trois volumes et certaines sont universellement connues par les films qui en ont été tirés (Quartet , Trio , Encore ).

Son théâtre est aussi très abondant: ce fut Lady Frederick , en 1907, qui le fit connaître, et son succès ne se démentit jamais jusqu’en 1933 (en 1908, quatre de ses pièces étaient simultanément données à Londres). Ce théâtre brillant, raffiné, spirituel, parfois amer — engagement personnel qui jaillissait de la nature profonde de Maugham — amusa et intéressa toujours le public. Écrivain extrêmement compétent, observateur lucide et précis, il lui a manqué, pour atteindre à un premier ordre de grandeur, la passion de l’homme et de son destin. Ses personnages vivent davantage de son habileté technique que de sa chair et de son sang.
