The cathedral was built and decorated with murals around 1130-1140. Its construction was initiated by Nifont, Archbishop of Novgorod, whose main goal was to carry on the missionary work in North-West Rus. The frescoes of the cathedral were created by Byzantine masters and are outstanding for the richness of their iconography, artistic value and their excellent condition.
