Val McDermid (* 4. Juni 1955) ist eine schottische Krimi-Autorin.

Leben
McDermid kommt aus Kirkcaldy und besuchte das St. Hilda's College in Oxford. Sie war die erste Studentin, die von einer staatlichen Schule in Schottland stammte. Während des Studiums war sie Vorsitzende der Studentenvertretung. Nach dem Abschluss wurde sie Journalistin und war auch als Bühnenautorin erfolgreich. Es dauerte jedoch bis 1987, bis sie mit Die Reportage ihren ersten Erfolg als Romanautorin hatte. Sie lebt mit Sohn (*2002), Lebensgefährtin und drei Katzen in Nordengland.
McDermids bekannteste Figuren sind die lesbische Journalistin Lindsay Gordon und die Privatdetektivin Kate Brannigan. Eine dritte Reihe hat den Profiler Tony Hill und DI Carol Jordan als Hauptakteure und bildet die Vorlage zur Fernsehserie Hautnah – Die Methode Hill (Wire in the Blood, 2002-2008).
Val McDermid thematisiert Homosexualität immer wieder in ihren Romanen. Sie engagiert sich auch darüber hinaus für die Gleichstellung Homosexueller.
