Цель настоящей книги состоит в изложении основ теории вероятностей - математической науки, изучающей закономерности случайных явлений. Теория вероятностей рассматривается в книге исключительно как математическая дисциплина, поэтому получение конкретных естественнонаучных или технических результатов в ней не является самоцелью. Все примеры в тексте книги имеют целью только разъяснение общих положений теории и указание на связь этих положений с задачами естествознания. Конечно, одновременно эти примеры дают указания на возможные области приложения общетеоретических результатов, а также развивают умение применять эти результаты в конкретных задачах. Такое направление изучения дает возможность читателю выработать своеобразную теоретико-вероятностную интуицию, которая позволяет предвидеть в общих чертах выводы раньше, чем применен аналитический аппарат.
