THE NATIONAL TRUST which operates in England, Wales and Northern Ireland has been in existence since 1895, and the National Trust for Scotland since 1931. Both work on the same lines, and their object is to preserve places of historic interest or natural beauty. They are independent charities; that is to say, they are not under government control and have the legal status of charities. They are run by their own members, subject to the requirement, contained in the National Trust Acts, that half the members of their councils must be nominated by other bodies. The present lists of nominating bodies include museums, universities, the Royal Institute of British Architects, scientific societies, the County Councils Association and the Youth Hostels Association.
