With Volume 44, I bring to a close ten years of association with the Annual Review of Physiology as a member of the Editorial Committee, an Associate Editor, and Editor. Julius H. Comroe, Jr., then Editor of the ARP, persuaded me to join the Editorial Board in 1971; his leadership and foresight played a key role in the evolution of ARP during the last decade. As in all of our other associations it was a deeply rewarding experience to have served with him. I also enjoyed a rich intellectual and personal harvest in working as Associate Editor during Ernst Knobil's tenure as Editor. Volume 44 continues the presentation of reviews in sections representative of the various subspecialties of physiology, the format first introduced with Volume 41. The inexorable growth of the body of physiological information and its attendant demands for specialization dictated first the spinoff of neurophysiology into the Annual Review of Neuroscience (now in its fifth year) and then the organization...
