События, описанные в романе Купера «Зверобой», развертываются во второй половине XVIII века в девственных лесах Северной Америки. В этот период европейцы заселяли американский материк. Колонизаторы уже обосновались на северо-восточном побережье и продвигались все дальше на запад, захватывая земли у коренного населения страны - индейцев. Индейцы оказывали героическое сопротивление, но у них не хватало оружия. Ослабляло их также и то, что отдельные племена были разобщены и враждовалимежду собой.
