A socialist country, the People's Republic of China is situated in the eastern part of Asia, on the western shore of the Pacific Ocean. Its territory of 9. 6 million square kilometres is inhabited by 56 nationalities, which total 975. 23 million people (l978). Through the ages, these diverse nationalities have together created a great and unique national culture, whose influence has spread to many countries of the world. The Chinese nation has a long history and glorious revolutionary traditions. Especially since the birth of the Communist Party of China in 1921, the Chinese people, under the leadership of the Party headed by Comrade Mao Zedong, waged a heroic and extremely hard struggle lasting several decades, finally winning great victory that led to the founding of the People'sRepublicofChinain 1949. Today, the Chinese people are working hard to make their motherland a powerful,modern, socialist country. China is a vast country with a great variety of natural scenery....
