The great city of Milan almost always brings to mind a picture of a cold, chaotic city, devoted solely to work, production and investment. This supeificial image is so deep-rooted that it is strange at times to think of tourists visiting it. We feel ill-at- ease when imagining them looking at and admiring its treasures surrounded by this bustling and apparently non-stop activity. Nevertheless it only requires broad-mindedness to enter a city and let it show its true face through its streets, monuments, palazzos and churches, and its people, to understand how different and fascinating Milan is. Naturally, unlike many other historical cities in Italy, it is not only a tourist sight, on the contrary it is a melting pot of hundreds of different and (at least apparently) conflicting aspects, which only reveal the combination for unlocking the city gates when taken as a whole.
