Задача очерка - в популярной форме познакомить читателя с самыми значительными и характерными для каждой эпохи памятниками. Так как многие из них являются одновременно памятниками историческими, в очерке уделено внимание не только их художественным особенностям, но и историческому значению. Что же касается данных о развитиигорода и его застройке, то они приводятся лишь в той степени, в какой это необходимо, чтобы понять своеобразие того или иного сооружения или ансамбля. В основу изложения положен хронологический принцип, то есть о памятниках рассказывается в порядке их возникновения. Небольшие отступления от этого принципа допущены для удобства читателей в тех случаях, когда речь идет о памятниках, территориально близко расположенных друг к другу.
