Настоящее пособие предназначается прежде всего для студентов, изучающих английский язык в качестве своей основной специальности, а также для широкого круга читателей, интересующихся жизнью современной Англии. Эта книга — не справочник и не учебник по страноведению. Она не претендует на всестороннее освещение английской действительности. Составители ограничились несколькими темами - "Парламент", "Города", "Сельская Англия", "Школа", "Университеты", "Быт и отдых", "Театр", "Кино, радио, телевидение", "Архитектура и живопись" . В эти девять разделов включены (иногда с сокращениями) оригинальные английские тексты различного характера: газетные очерки, протоколы парламентских дебатов, статьи об искусстве, отрывки из художественных произведений. Помимо тематического разнообразия, тексты представляют интерес и как образцы разных стилей современного английского языка.
