Patterns of Fashion 3

This volume of PATTERNS OF FASHION is based on research carried out by Janet Arnold over a period of more than twenty years, during which she studied and recorded - in drawings, scale patterns and photographs - surviving linen clothing wherever she came across it. But it was as a result of her work on the tailored garments of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries that she became more aware of the contribution linen clothing made to fashion, and began to plan a companion volume devoted solely to it.

Janet Arnold

Janet Arnold (1932-November 2, 1998) was a British clothing historian, costume designer, teacher, conservator, and author.

She funded the Janet Arnold Award to further in-depth study of Western dress, administered by the Society of Antiquaries of London. "Applicants must be able to demonstrate that they wish to pursue a particular piece of original research based on items of dress or their remains, with a view to eventually disseminating knowledge gained with the award through publication, display, cataloguing, teaching or through practical use in conservation or accurate reproduction." She was herself awarded the 1998 Sam Wanamaker Prize.
