This book has above all a practical purpose. It is an album of illustrations rather than a treatise, and gives examples rather than precepts. In it we wished to avoid the underwater hazards of theory, which, however correct they might appear, are always too imprecise and generalized as presented in abstract form. Masterpieces always speak for themselves, and the surest way to draw lessons from them is to analyze them, and not to try to make them exemplify a conclusion already reached, which often turns out to be too abstract to cover exceptions or special cases. The latter seems to us too dangerous a procedure to apply to those branches of art which would appear least amenable to fixed rules and in which the most important place is occupied by the artist's instinct, imagination and even caprice.
